To toast the release of our decadent new range of winter-primed Luxury Fabrics, representing the absolute pinnacle of artisan tradition and craftsmanship, we’re spotlighting some of the histories and stories of the iconic northern Italian mills that birthed them.
The famed Vitale Barberis Canonico (or “VBC”) was founded in 1663 and is one of the most iconic, trusted and celebrated mills to originate from northern Italy. As the world’s oldest fabric mill, with 13 generations of family guiding the business across more than 350 years of rich history, their house philosophy is understandably rooted in tradition and quality, but their view to the future and evolving trends has meant they’ve remained at the forefront of the industry.
VBC fabrics, capturing a range of natural fibres (including a love for Australian Merino wool) and an array of patterns, weaves and tones, are favoured as the hero of garments from some of the most esteemed luxury brands in the world; with the Luxury Collection, InStitchu customers can join the VBC legacy, crafting a made-to-measure garment to their own design from a fabric with unparalleled gravitas.
With roots in Trivero in northern Italy, the Loro Piana family began trading wool in the early 1800s, founding the current company in 1924. Drawing on the rich legacy and emphasising state-of-the-art technology in their technical processes, fabrics milled at the esteemed Loro Piana have become synonymous with the ideals of Italian craftsmanship and artisan style; timeless, sophisticated and innovative.
InStitchu are proud to offer an array of sublime Loro Piana fabrics for tailored suits, coats and blazers, though we’re particularly fond of their remarkable expression of 100% Australian Merino wool, marrying the legacy of our own internationally revered wool farmers with Italian traditions in artisan excellence.
Founded in 1973–comparatively youthful in northern Italy’s centuries-long tradition in milling the finest fabrics in the world–Drago ushered in a new chapter for luxury and quality in Biella-born fabrics, founding a specialised spinning mill and emphasising innovation and technology in their approach from their factories in Lessona and Verrone.
Today, Drago is stewarded by Paolo Drago, though the original founders (and Paolo’s parents) Umberto and Laura continue to support the business. Their fabrics are utilised by premier tailors and brands all over the world; our Luxury collection represents a coveted opportunity to design a custom, made-to-measure suit, blazer or coat in the rich legacy of the Drago family.
Marrying technical expertise, historic credentials and a sense of vibrant creativity, the Ferla business was founded in 1880 and is closely woven in to the story of Biella’s finest mills, whilst retaining a unique and distinct style of their own, evolving with each season. Their love for Baby Alpaca, beloved for its softness and versatility, is a signature of the Ferla name; they are the sole weaver to utilise it, weaving it into blends of virgin wool, silk and linen to produce decadent, cashmere-like fabrics equal to the finest in the world.
Tallia di Delfino has come a long way since its inception as a simple draper in 1903; still family-run, Delfino has taken a lead in developing some of the industry’s most innovative, advanced techniques in fabric sustainability, production and research. Their fabrics, emphasising sublime wool, silk and mohair fibres, marries a 150-year old tradition of generational artisanal excellence with contemporary function, quality and authenticity.
A sense of provenance shines through each fabric; Delfino’s production headquarters are nestled in a coveted northern-Italian spot, among pristine, mineral-rich water sources, famous for acting like a fabric softener throughout the milling process and imparting some of the region’s natural beauty into each fabric originating from there.
