Contemporary Classic: How To Drop Bomber Jacket Style

27 July, 2022

Originally known as a Flight Jacket and developed by the US military to keep pilots warm in the open air fighter planes throughout WWI, the iconic knitted cuff and hem of a Bomber jacket was designed to insulate the sleeves and ensure wind and chill didn’t creep underneath.

In later years, the Bomber became a star of cinema in its own right, drawing on its military heritage and casual elegance - features like a shorter length, looser arms and a laid-back, lightweight fabric mean the garment is all-season and most-occasion appropriate, particularly on Hollywood actors. Look to movies like Tokyo Joe (1949), A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) and Rebel Without a Cause (1955) for a masterclass in how the Bomber shifted American fashion to more relaxed territory, mixing street and military wear. Or, in recent years, check out the look-at-me silk scorpion bomber worn by Ryan Gosling in Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2011 moody and violent art-house flick, ‘Drive’.
