Three things to know about the iconic smart casual staple: the gold-buttoned navy blazer.
Like many tailoring staples, the origins of the gold-buttoned navy blazer can be traced to military origins. The story goes, the captain of the HMS Blazer, a British Royal Navy shop, ordered his officers replace the buttons on their short, double-breasted jackets with gold buttons for a visit from Her Majesty Queen Victoria.
The gold button navy blazer is that rare thing: relaxed and luxurious, simultaneously. It oozes Ivy League sophistication and old-world style, but never feels overdressed or ostentatious. Casualise further with jeans and a knit, pair with light chinos, loafers and a button-down for a stylish passegata, or up the ante and wear with complimentary grey wool trousers, a crisp cotton shirt and textured tie.
The difference between an ordinary work wool navy jacket and the gold button iteration is in the details: as well as the decadently chilled-out gold buttons themselves, lighter construction across the canvassing and shoulder and more relaxed patch pockets contribute to a garment that is slightly less formal and contrived in its appeal. As well as being easier to pair with casual trousers and shoes, the drape of the fabric is more natural, with less canvassing and the added weight of the metal buttoning.
