Custom(er) Stories: Co-Founders of The Biting Truth

7 August, 2020

Anna Debenham and Alex Parker are the two smiling faces behind The Biting Truth, practising dieticians. They dropped by InStitchu for a custom suiting experience to celebrate the launch of InStitchu womenswear, so we caught up with the pair to chat about life, health and women’s tailoring.

Tell us about your business. What’s the mission? How do you achieve it?

The Biting Truth is a corporate nutrition consulting business. We work with companies to deliver nutrition programs to their employees. Our mission is to cut through the clutter online when it comes to nutrition and provide people with the relevant and up-to-date nutritional science to help them optimise their overall health and wellbeing.

How did you arrive at doing what you’re doing? How did you link up?

We actually went to high school together! The funny part is that we weren't actually close friends back at school (however we were science buddies from biology and chemistry!) We both ended up studying a Bachelor of Science together before doing our Masters of Nutrition and Dietetics at Sydney University. We actually started The Biting Truth when studying as we always had a dream to run a business together one day.

Tell us something about nutrition that people often get wrong?

There are many ways to put together a healthy diet, provided it is built on a foundation of real whole foods, close to the way nature intended. Don't get caught up with the latest fads, detoxes and trendy diets. These are only ever short term fixes and almost never lead to the kind of changes you need for permanent results.

How is teaching kids as part of your job? Are there particular messages you think need to be emphasised and ways of teaching that you find work?

We are very passionate about childhood and adolescent nutrition and have been fortunate to be able to work in this area for many years now. We work with kids of all ages (preschoolers all the way up to year 12s). We particularly love the work we do with high school students. Our messages are simple and we aim to empower young people to adopt healthy eating behaviours that they can carry with them throughout their adult lives. We deliver these messages in creative ways and always involve food in the process.

Most of your work has to do with wellness and health - the things you eat, the way you live. Do you think the way that you dress, the clothes you wear and design, can instill a sense of confidence in you too?

Absolutely! When you treat your body well - healthy food, good sleep, regular exercise - you feel good! If you feel comfortable in the clothes you’re wearing, you’ll feel confident and empowered. When you feel and look good it’s great motivation to keep going. We do a lot of presenting as part of our job, and we definitely feel that when we’re in an outfit that we feel confident in, it helps us deliver an even better presentation. It’s all about loving the skin you’re in!

Anna, tell us about your personal sense of style.

When I’m at work I like to get quite dressed up, I find it fun wearing pretty corporate outfits and it makes me enjoy presenting when I like my outfit. However, outside of work I’ve got a casual sense of style, I do also love the 90s look. Im a big fan of jeans and blazer combo too. Simple and sexy!

Anna, tell us about your custom pink InStitchu suit? Was it fun designing something bold?!

I ended up going with a matching baby pink blazer and pants combo! It was so fun designing this suit, as I’ve got nothing like it in my wardrobe. I can’t wait to wear it as a matching outfit, but will also get heaps of wear out of the blazer and pants separately. I’ve always wanted a matching suit, however, found they never fit me properly. It’s so amazing getting a suit fully tailored to my body - makes such a difference!

Alex, how would you describe your style?

My style has always been pretty simple. I'm a sucker for activewear so when I'm not wearing it, I’m all about dressing for comfort - whether that’s a simple linen dress, a pair of ‘mum’ jeans or a midi skirt, when I feel comfortable, I feel confident :)

Alex, how did you arrive at your custom olive linen jacket and black tailored pants? How did you enjoy the process?

I’m obsessed with linen at the moment so when I started browsing the beautiful linen fabrics, there was no going back! A good blazer with some jeans and a pair of sneakers is a wardrobe must for me! And you can’t go past a pair of tailored pants that fit perfectly right?! I’m excited to be able to wear these pieces together and also separately.
