Real Custom(er) Weddings: Meet Nick & Jess Cook

12 October, 2021

There is perhaps no greater privilege than being part of a wedding. To be trusted with dressing some or all of a wedding party is a great responsibility and a massive honour we take on with a lot of seriousness, and a lot of pride – as a brand, we genuinely feel proud to play a small part in these special moments in your life. With that in mind, we’re excited to showcase some of these inspiring weddings, exploring the relationships and stories behind the customers that chose InStitchu as their nuptial partner.

Meet Jess and Nick who met working at high paced advertising firm Saatchi & Saatchi, and who threw caution to the wind, booking a destination wedding marrying in a private ceremony in Bali, Indonesia, pre-COVID.

1. How’d you meet?

Our love story began at ad agency Saatchi & Saatchi, where we both worked…Saatchi’s had a great culture, so there was a lot of time spent getting to know each other at various pubs throughout The Rocks. Eventually, our friendship grew and after one particular Friday-night-drinks and a few (too many) Café Patron shots, we shared our first kiss! The rest is history!

2. Tell us about yourselves.

Since those early ‘work hard, play hard’ days, we have both ‘jumped the fence’ to marketing roles, put down roots and love our slower Northern Beaches lifestyle. New parents to our baby girl, we are so lucky to enjoy long family walks on the beach (haha) and along the lake with our first (fur)child, Chilli.

3. Tell us about your wedding.

We were married in Bali, Indonesia. After pretty much planning one wedding in Jervis Bay on Sydney’s south coast, we felt that it wasn’t really ‘us’. So, we threw caution to the wind, canned it and booked a destination wedding. Jess had always dreamed of a ‘destination’ wedding, enjoying a big holiday together with family and close friends in tropical paradise.

Mirroring our life by the beach, we really wanted a coastal and laid back vibe for our wedding, with an epic sunset and a touch of sparkle. Sundowners at sunset rolling into dinner was exactly this. We served ‘his and hers’ cocktails based on personality traits and instead of a champagne toast, we cut our cake with a chaser of café patron to get the party started! Mimicking the vibe of the first night we kissed!

4. Tell us about your InStitchu experience.

The InStitchu experience was amazing from start to finish. Not being an expert in fabrics myself, the stylists were able to recommend and guide me into choosing fabrics that were a perfect mix of formal yet casual, fitting our Balinese wedding perfectly. On top of this, the stylist was able to help me think about ways to keep me as cool as possible on the day.

Our appointment was in the Clarence street showroom straight after work. We enjoyed a beverage while we perused suit styles and options. We then made a night of it and headed to dinner and drinks, meeting up with Jess & the bridesmaids.

5. Tell us about your wedding suit.

Nick opted for a custom three-piece to say ‘I do’ in. Given the heat, the idea was for him to be able to take his jacket off after the ceremony (and photos), keeping the waistcoat and staying polished for dinner and speeches. To make Nick’s suit that little bit special, he had his initials and wedding date stitched in. And of course, it was lined with a cocktail lining to represent the occasion and vibe of the day!

To tackle the heat, Nick opted for a blue linen blend waistcoat & jacket combo (for Jess’ something blue) and ivory linen / silk blend pants with custom side tabs at the waist. Sweaty is not sexy on your wedding day!

The Groomsmen were paired back in ivory linen silk blend suits & crisp white shirts. The Bridesmaids were in emerald / forest green silk suede dresses to bring the lush & leafy Balinese theme together. The bride didn’t wear white, but ivory which pulled everything together perfectly. The suits fit perfectly the first go so there was no need for another fitting session! We even had one of our Groomsmen in Hong Kong who was remotely fitted.

6. What was your favourite moment from the day?

It’s SO hard to cut it down to one moment… absolutely the ceremony, sharing vows & saying I do in front of your nearest and dearest is something very special. Closely followed by our band kicking it up a notch during dinner – we were all up and dancing in our seats! Such a memorable and fun moment! Then, jumping in the pool in our bridal gown & suit (sorry InStitchu!). The good news though is that the suit recovered…the dress not so much!

7. Any advice to those with upcoming nuptials?

Do not sweat the small stuff. Easier said than done but at the end of the day, all that matters is saying ‘I do’. You get to marry the love of your life and that’s what it’s all about! And book an epic honeymoon, get that upgrade. You’ll never have a better reason to splash out like that again.
