Our new Stylist Series brings to light the people behind our brand—join us as we discuss their journey's into the world of tailoring, from their first suiting experience, to their current style influencers and favourite suit details, to the items they place value on, their favourite coffee, literature, wine and more...This week, meet Emilia, one of our George St Sydney Stylists.
Tell us about the first suit you ever purchased and your experience.
My first tailored suit was from InStitchu when I first started in early 2019. I was so excited for the whole process because I had never had anything tailor made before. It was a navy, herringbone, double-breasted suit and it definitely is my favourite out of all the suits I own.
What items in your life do you place the most value on?
My most valued possessions are my family heirlooms that have been passed down to me from generations. I genuinely don't think I would have got through my fashion graduate collection without my grandmother's antique sewing machine, this piece is so special to me. Equally as special to me is a piece of jewellery from my mother—I hope to one day pass down both of these items to my own children one day.
Tell our readers something about yourself they may not know and about yourself in 100 words or less.
I learned how to make a suit while I was at fashion university. Tailoring was a complex subject and I previous to this I had no idea how much work went into the whole suiting process—the workmanship involved is something I now really appreciate and admire. From here I became obsessed with tailoring and haven’t looked back—helping to create personal garments with my customers brings me so much joy, it truely is a way for individuals to express themselves and I love that about tailored garments. Through a mutual friend I found my role here at InStitchu early last year and it's been such a great experience to continue to learn more about tailoring and grow with the brand.
Talk us through what you’re wearing, how it’s unique and why you love it.
When it comes to personal style you can catch me on the weekend in jeans and a t-shirt with a tailored blazer (or active wear!) and during the week, in my tailored suits. My style tends to reflect my mood and no day is the same! My go to's (particularly for this Winter) is layering, with simple tones that don't compete with each other, I like to keep things classic and understated.
Explain the types of things you look out for and love in a suit—your must haves that make a suit special.
Perfectly fitting shoulders! This never goes unnoticed—a perfectly fitted suit really makes a statement. I also think in general, a tailored suit reflects power, status and confidence which can really have an impact on a person's self confidence. My must haves details wise, are definitely functional button holes on the sleeves and pick stitching on the edges of the lapel, both of these details are also traditionally small signs that your suit is tailored and not off-the-rack. I love all the little details and the craftsmanship and notice them.
What’s your favourite part about your job?
This question is easy—helping men (and now women) explore their personal styles and seeing their satisfaction when the final product is delivered. I love seeing the spring in their step as they walk out in their suit after their final appointment, it puts a smile on my face every single time!
What are your style tips for working from home?
When working from home—I think start your day as you would any regular working day. Make an effort to get dressed up (at least from the waist up), put on your makeup, do your hair…you never know when a surprise zoom call may arise and there are so many mood benefits to keeping a routine including getting dressed—as they say, look good, feel good, it's true and it shouldn't be underestimated. Resist the temptation to stay in track pants all day.
What do you wake up with in the morning? Almond latte is always my go to! Especially from Junes cafe in the CBD.
What’s your idea of the perfect meal and accompanying beverage?
I can’t go past Mexican and a margarita! It’s definitely a weekly ritual!
What are your top 3 must reads and what are you reading right now?
Reading is one of my favourite pastimes. My 3 top reads are Good Vibes, Good Life, Man’s Search for Meaning and The Tattooist of Auschwitz. I’m currently reading Dare to Lead by Brene Brown!
